Nothing's New Phone (3a) Series Brings Premium Features to Mid-Range Market

Nothing just dropped their latest mid-range smartphones, and I've got to say, these devices are punching well above their weight class. The Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro, unveiled in Malaysia on March 7th, are taking everything we loved about the Phone (2a) and cranking it up several notches.

Having followed Nothing since their 2020 launch, I've always appreciated their approach to making tech fun again. These new phones continue that tradition while bringing some seriously impressive upgrades to the table.

Design That Stands Out

Both models feature Nothing's signature exposed aesthetic with a refined glass back panel. What caught my eye is how they've managed to showcase the new camera system through their transparent design while achieving better symmetry and visual details. They've also bumped up the durability to IP64 rating and, for the environmentally conscious among us, achieved their lowest carbon footprint yet at 51.3kg of CO2e.

Camera System That Impresses

This is where things get really interesting. For the first time, Nothing is bringing optical zoom to their phones. The standard Phone (3a) comes with a 50MP telephoto camera offering 2x optical zoom and up to 30x ultra zoom using AI enhancement.

The Pro version takes it even further with a periscope camera sporting a Sony LYTIA 600 sensor, 3x optical zoom, and up to 60x ultra zoom. What's particularly cool is the telemacro capability, allowing you to focus on subjects as close as 15cm – something many flagship phones can't match.

The main cameras have been upgraded too. Both feature 50MP sensors, with the Pro version offering faster autofocus and better handling of harsh lighting. For selfie enthusiasts, the Pro model boasts a 50MP front camera capable of 4K video with AI stabilization.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, both phones pack Snapdragon's 7s Gen 3 platform, which delivers up to 33% faster CPU performance compared to the Phone (2a). Gaming performance gets a boost with 11% better graphics, and AI processing is a whopping 92% faster – perfect for the AI features Nothing is introducing.

Battery life isn't sacrificed either. Both models come with 5000mAh batteries that can last up to two days, and with 50W fast charging, you can get a day's worth of power in under 20 minutes.

A Display That Shines

The 6.77-inch displays feature Full HD+ resolution with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Touch response has been doubled to 480Hz (and 1000Hz in Gaming Mode), and peak brightness now reaches an impressive 3000 nits – over twice as bright as the previous model. Perfect for those sunny outdoor days when most phones wash out.

Software Innovations

Running on Nothing OS 3.1 (based on Android 15), both phones introduce "Essential Space" – an AI-powered hub for notes and ideas that you can access with a dedicated key on the side of the phone. Nothing is also promising 6 years of updates, including 3 years of Android updates.

Pricing and Availability

The Phone (3a) starts at RM1,699 (12+256GB) and comes in Black, White, and Blue, Which is a brand new colour for Nothing and a breath of fresh air for them. Pre-orders begin March 8th, with availability starting March 22nd.

The Phone (3a) Pro starts at RM1,999 (12+256GB) in Grey and Black, with pre-orders also beginning March 8th but general availability starting April 7th. Malaysian buyers will have a chance to be among the first in the world to purchase the Pro model at a special event on March 15th at CROSSOVER Sunway Pyramid. For thos who prefer to purchase them online (and hate waiting in line), you may purchase them via the official sales channels namely via their official websiteShopee, Lazada, and Tiktok Stores. As for Official Nothing retailers you may get a hands on experience at DirectD, TMT, URBAN REPUBLIC, Vivid Concepts, TAC Mobile Solutions, SS Solution, as well as Nothing Image Store at Plaza Low Yat. Owning the latest offering from Nothing can also be made via their official Mobile Service Providers, U Mobile and Yes5G.

As someone who's watched Nothing grow from a startup with ambitious ideas to a company that's sold over 7 million devices and generated $1 billion in revenue, I'm excited to see these new phones hit the market. They're bringing features typically reserved for flagships down to a more accessible price point – and doing it with style.
