Samsung is shaking up the mid-range smartphone market with its latest Galaxy A series lineup, and trust me, this isn't your average budget phone update. The tech giant just unveiled three new models—the Galaxy A56 5G, A36 5G, and A26 5G—that are bringing some serious AI muscle to more affordable price points.
The standout feature here? Something Samsung's calling "Awesome Intelligence"—which is basically their way of saying they're democratizing AI features that were previously reserved for their premium devices. As TM Roh, Samsung's Mobile chief, put it: "The new Galaxy A series marks an important step in our mission of AI for all."
AI That Actually Matters
The coolest part of these new phones has to be the enhanced "Circle to Search" feature. If you haven't tried this yet, it's basically Google's answer to "why can't I just search for that thing I'm looking at?" Now you can search for anything on your screen by circling it with your finger—and the update makes it even more useful.
Hear a song playing nearby? Just long-press the navigation bar, tap the music button, and the phone will tell you what's playing without you having to scramble for Shazam. It'll also recognize phone numbers, emails, and URLs so you can take action with a single tap. Pretty handy stuff for everyday use.
Camera Magic That Fixes Your Bad Photos
The camera system across all three models starts with a solid 50MP main lens, but the A56 5G takes things up a notch with a 12MP ultra-wide lens and some exclusive AI tricks.
My personal favorite has to be "Best Face"—available only on the A56. We've all been there: you take a group photo and someone blinks or looks away. This feature lets you combine the best expressions from a motion photo into one perfect shot. No more awkward retakes or settling for photos where your friend looks like they're mid-sneeze.
The entire lineup also comes with refined Object Eraser, which lets you remove photobombers or distractions from your shots with a few taps. And if you're into customizing your photos, the new Filters feature lets you extract colors and styles from existing photos to create your own unique look.
Built to Last (No, Really)
Samsung's stepping up its software game, promising up to six generations of Android OS updates and six years of security patches. That's impressive longevity for mid-range devices and honestly beats what many flagship phones from other brands offer.
The A56 and A36 both sport 6.7-inch Super AMOLED displays with 1200 nits of brightness—meaning you can actually see your screen in sunlight (revolutionary concept, I know). They've also added stereo speakers for better sound.
Battery life shouldn't be an issue with 5,000mAh batteries across the board. The A56 and A36 support 45W fast charging too, so you won't be tethered to an outlet for long.
Durability-wise, all three models come with IP67 water and dust resistance, which means they can survive a quick dunk in water or a sudden rainstorm. They're also equipped with Corning Glass protection against scratches and cracks.
Colors and Availability
The phones come in some fun color options:
- Galaxy A56 5G: Awesome Lightgray, Awesome Graphite, Awesome Olive, and Awesome Pink
- Galaxy A36 5G: Awesome Lavender, Awesome Black, Awesome White, and Awesome Lime
- Galaxy A26 5G: Black, Mint, and Peach Pink
For Malaysian shoppers, Samsung's running a special promo until March 17, 2025: pay RM10 to get an RM100 e-voucher for purchasing the new phones between March 18-31. With these new A series models, Samsung's making a compelling case that you don't need to drop flagship money to get useful AI features and solid hardware. The question is: will other manufacturers follow suit in bringing AI down to more accessible price points? For consumers' sake, let's hope so.
