Huawei's Triple Threat: World's First Tri-Fold Phone and New Wearable Tech Set to Transform Malaysian Market
Huawei pushes the boundaries with revolutionary Mate XT Ultimate Design and enhances wellness tech lineup with Band 10 and FreeArc earbuds
I've seen my fair share of smartphone launches, but this one genuinely stopped me in my tracks. Huawei is about to shake up the Malaysian tech scene with something I've never held in my hands before: a phone that folds not once, but twice.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world's first tri-foldable smartphone, is making its Malaysian debut on February 18th, and it's exactly as futuristic as it sounds. Having followed foldable tech since its rocky beginnings, I can tell you this feels like the moment the technology truly grows up.
What struck me most during the preview was how seamlessly the phone transforms between modes. Imagine watching a movie on a generous 10.2-inch screen while waiting for your coffee, then folding it down to thumb through emails, and finally collapsing it completely to slip into your pocket when your name gets called. The X-True display unfolds to a cinema-worthy 16:11 ratio – what Huawei calls the "golden ratio" – and I have to admit, it's pretty impressive in person.
The engineering behind it is fascinating – two precision tracks supporting both inward and outward folds with ultra-light hinges working in concert. For photography enthusiasts, they've somehow packed their XMAGE camera system with a 10-step adjustable physical aperture into this slender frame. The Mate XT Ultimate Design will come in striking Red and Black, with pre-orders starting now until March 14th.
But Huawei isn't stopping at reimagining phones. They're rolling out two new wearables that caught my attention for completely different reasons.
The Huawei Band 10 continues the company's decade-long journey in health monitoring with a focus I personally appreciate – better sleep tracking and emotional wellbeing. After testing numerous fitness trackers over the years, I've found most fall short on meaningful sleep insights, but the Band 10's Enhanced Sleep Health Management promises more actionable recommendations based on your patterns.
What's truly clever is the Emotional Wellbeing Assistant, which monitors physiological changes to track your emotional state throughout the day. It even displays your mood through an adorable Pet Panda watch face that changes expressions in real-time. At just 15g, it's featherlight on the wrist, and the aluminium alloy case comes in five colors: Matte Black, White, Blue, Green, and Purple.
The Huawei FreeArc completes the trio as the company's first open-ear earbuds with ear hooks. Having run countless miles with earbuds that either fall out or isolate me too much from my surroundings, these IP57 water-resistant buds seem like the answer to my exercise audio needs.
Their design is based on studies of over 10,000 ear shapes, resulting in what Huawei calls their C-bridge design – a 0.7mm nickel-titanium alloy that molds to various ear shapes. The Sterling Sound and Deep Bass technologies promise quality audio without isolation from your environment.
Pre-orders for the Band 10 and FreeArc open today and run until March 24th. While pricing wasn't revealed in the preview materials, expect announcements when the embargo lifts on February 18th.
For those keeping track of Huawei's expanded ecosystem, the E-wallet QR payment functionality is now available across their entire wearable lineup, including the Watch GT series, Watch Fit 3, Watch D2, and Watch Ultimate.
As someone who's seen tech trends come and go, I'll be watching closely to see if tri-folding becomes the new standard or remains a fascinating experiment in what's possible. Either way, February 18th marks an innovation milestone worth noting.
